On the few days-hours-minutes I actually get to just futz around and draw whatever I want, I’ve been consciously making sketches tight enough to later on compile into a sketchbook. I’m a lot busier than I’d like to be these days, but I can’t really complain about that. That said, I wish I could complete the thing faster than I currently am, but that’s just how it shakes out. I was inspired by what Brian Wood did a while back, releasing his sketchbook for free. And it wasn’t like it was just a buncha rough stuff either. Dystopium will be a free downloadable cbr and/or pdf file in the coming months, so those of who you care, stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s a few things that’ll be in it…

I quite doubt it’ll be the most thematically unified thing I’ve ever shared with people, but eh… what’re you gonna do?

I was on a Skype call with my buddy EJ while I was sketching this out. He loves Superman, so I’m sure he’ll get a warm fuzzy feeling in his pants when he finds out. This was supposed to be just a pencil sketch, but I decided to take it to digital completion since I’m pretty happy about the spirit of it. I love All-Star, and this is somewhat of a love letter to Morrison and Quitely.

Pencil Flex: Disney

It was Kat’s turn to pick a theme, and it sure wasn’t hard to tell she’s been itching to draw some Disney themed stuff for a while. I was apprehensive at first, as my style doesn’t exactly lend itself to anything this cartoony, but I ended up having a lot more fun than I thought I would. I had somehow forgotten that the House of Mouse had some of the hottest animated ladiez. Silly me.

No artist worth his salt can run a sketch blog and not do Star Wars. And we are very very salty artists. I managed to whip out three pieces before I caught a nasty case of tonsillitis. Not back at full steam yet as I’m posting this, but certainly feeling a lot better than a coupla days ago. My midi-chlorian count was in the shit.

Pencil Flex: Prehistoric

Pencil Flex came back in a big way when Miko picked the theme this week and decided (unilaterally, like a punk) that we’d all be doing Paleo art. I’m pretty sure it’s no secret that I love drawing dinosaurs though, so I had a really good time doing the pieces I had the time for.

I went with just the usual rough pencil sketches and cleaned them up some with Photoshop rendering. Trying to win back some painting sea legs as I find I’m a bit out of practice on that front.
