Watchinging 01: Prometheus

The wife and I decided to take our relationship to the next level and start doing movie date podcasts.  That’s what Watchinging is all about! So deal!

For this first episode, we had our friend Macky Pamintuan join us in a conversation about Prometheus.

    Alien vs Aliens… ahhh, a debate as old as time. I like Alien just a little bit more, just a little. It’s the subtleties, the horror, the fresh introduction to the world, Ripley’s crack, yeah, the little things.

    As for comparing Prometheus to Phantom Menace, that may be somewhat accurate. I was about to say “how dare you!”; but when you think of the long dev time, the disappointment in some circles (almost all circles for Phantom)a shift in feel… oh whatever, how dare you?! Prometheus is way better!

    What I love most about the movie? All the little things from Alien. Everything from the ship that they found in the first film, the pilot chair, the emergency message. Outside of that,David was awesome. And of course, the emergency surgery. LOVED THAT.Overall, great sci fi flick. Would’ve liked more horror and less philosophical mumbo jumbo, but I appreciated those parts too.

    And dragon tattoo chick was great. No Ripley, but pretty intense performance. I really don’t get all the complaints. Like I don’t get all the complaints on Spidey. Now bring on the next Blade Runner!

    {O_O} < agreed with what you guys had to say. i also really enjoyed this movie. i did see the stereotyped characters, but i believe that they were put there as part of the design of the movie.

    let me start with saying that the alien franchise was dying in North America (worldwide the film continued to profit due to its violence and special effects). i think it was dying in North America mostly because the overall feelings towards aliens was shifting…from aliens being destroyers to aliens simply being…alien. different. The generation of kids who weren't interested in watching close encounter of the third kind were first introduced to aliens through the horror movie Aliens. Then were further intrigued as teens with Aliens 2…were not so intrigued as young adults in 1992. Since the berlin wall came down and the gulf war had just finished…

    By 2012 most of us alien fans were now young professionals. the hardcore of us that have been internet inclined been keeping track of David Flynn's http://www.mt.net/~watcher/ since 1993. We don't want aliens that just kill us…

    Prometheus success and appeal comes from the discussion that was pioneered by people like Dänikenn, Sitchin, Flynn etc. it takes all the themes that us UFO, Zero Point energy, Ancient Astronaut, Roswell, 2012, Conspiracy, internet junkies feed on. The weak characters depict clearly the negative "energy frequencies" that do not have a place in the "consciousness shift". Like selfishness, greed, etc, "i have a job and I'm doing it for money! this isn't in the contract so I'm not going to help waaa waaaa! fuck you!". Then he dies. You know what i'm saying? Like they put red flags in the movie that are obvious enough for normal people to recognize, and big enough for us enthusiast to be like "YEA MAN, TOTALLY SAW THAT COMING!" By the middle of the film we know only the ones who are open minded and truly honestly search for truth will be able to continue the journey…. {O_O}.

    As for the messianic themes of the film. Every great film has the messianic theme. I don't think they depicted any more than Avatar did, or Snowwhite and the Huntsman… but then again the nature of the alien engineers would cause discussion in the christian community no matter what. so adding a little more in there was just icing on the cake…christians watching films to criticize it is $ in the bank man $ in the bank! maaaan! thats the regular MO of big budget hollywood, maybe?

    As for the black goo… i wonder why most opinions assume that the black goo that came in a bottle is the same black goo in the weapons of mass destruction. If we follow the theme of gods. then we know gods have the power to destroy and create…almost like hydrogen………. {O_O}

    As for being a prequel. I think they did what Star Trek did with there latest film. They modified it to reach the audience of today. because if you don't change. if you don't adapt. You die… -write that down – {O_O}

    thank you for the podcast. i was hoping for better sound quality though…you know. good sound give good vibes. if i didn't like prometheus so much i would have shut this off after the hearing the guests who sounded like they were on telephones.

    But my opinion is the movie was a 10/10. Entertaining, thought provoking and left you dying to see more.
